A Basic Guideline About Carbon Steel for the Beginners

By September 23, 2022September 17th, 2024No Comments

Carbon steel combines carbon and iron that contain up to 2.1 wt.% carbon. In general, there is no other specified alloying element available in carbon steel, but experts often include trace amounts of manganese, copper, or silicon there. However, the maximum amount of silicon, manganese, and copper is 0.6 wt.%, 1.65 wt.%, and 0.6 wt.%, respectively.

Remember, carbon steel has no chromium. Instead, you can find a higher carbon concentration than other types of steel. You may think of pursuing structural steel fabrication to get quality carbon steel, and only an expert can help you with that.

What Are the Types of Carbon Steel and Their Properties?

According to the experts, there are three types of carbon steels- high carbon, medium carbon, and low carbon steel. Carbon content in low carbon steel is less than < 0.25, 0.25 – 0.60 in medium carbon steel and 0.60 – 1.25 in high carbon steel. Low-carbon steel is one of the most widely used steels.

You cannot make the steel hard by applying heat treatment. That’s why it is suitable for heavy work in cold temperatures. Generally, experts use low carbon steels to make I-beams, channel and angle iron, automobile body components, bridge components, food cans, and pipes.

On the other hand, the experts improve the high carbon steel’s mechanical properties via heat treatment, involving tempering and quenching. No doubt, it has greater strength compared to low-carbon steels. This type of steel is the best for the toughness and hardness of carbon but has the lowest ductility.

Experts use high steel carbon to make cutting tools and high-strength wire, whereas medium carbon steel is used for train wheels, crankshafts, railway tracks, gears, and machinery parts.

Where Do We Use Carbon Steel?

The experts use this versatile alloy metal in the gas and oil industry. They utilize the material to make pipelines, structural components, flow lines, and platforms. People mainly prefer structural steel fabrication to get tensile strength and hardness. According to fabricators, you can curve the carbon steel elbows at 45 degrees or 90 degrees to connect the pipes.
